Gallery37 Presents On The Map by Jaden Brown: Spotlighting local heroes from North Birmingham

 

Jaden brown is a visual artist, studying Level 3 Fine Art at Solihull College, and has previously showcased work at the Birmingham Hippodrome, exploring the theme of identity, as well as showcasing a photography project at The GAP Arts Project.

Jaden creates multiple artforms, with one being 'Hyperrealism', (painting resembling a photograph) with the use of pencils and watercolor crayons. Jaden’s Art has been recognised by worldwide celebrities, including the famous actor Michael B. Jordan.

Jaden will now be exploring the theme 'Roaming' which will allow Art viewers to engage with his five A1 Art pieces of local celebrities from North -Birmingham areas, which will be displayed in their areas.

Dapz On The Map

  • Birmingham born, multi-talented artist, Dapz OTM is more than your average Grime MC. He has a philosophy towards his art that moves the listener and has gained him the respect of fans, artists and media alike. Dapz OTM is now an integral part of the next generation of Grime MCs/Singers. He grew up listening to everything from Dancehall, Jungle & Garage to the new sounds of underground Grime & Rap. He combines all of these influences into his own neo-soulful sound, which he developed in the studio with the guidance of mentor/engineer DJ Apostle. Dapz has supported the likes of Kano and Skepta on tour before going on to sell out his 1st headline show at the O2 Academy Birmingham.

  • The Company

    Janette Bushell will be leading a team of 5 creative women to create art of various different genres along the canal which the public can then find via QR codes after the artwork has taken place. The team includes Harmeet Chagger-Khan, Bethany Kay Hopkins, Claire Whitcomb, Ming De Nasty and Chanelle Harris.

Reverend Eve Pitts

  • Reverend Eve Pitts is the vicar at the Holy Trinity Church in Birchfield. She is also Britain's first black, female vicar.The Church of England has long been a male dominated institution where the representation of women is slowly improving- but there are still many barriers to overcome.

  • Emma Houston & Bellatrix

    Emma is a non-binary Dance artist and choreographer and Bella is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist (she’s a beatboxer) from Bristol. The two intend to create a piece together which explores issues surrounding identity, rejecting norms set by conventional society and exploring what happens when you "roam" outside of these boundaries.

    Joseph Toonga’s “Born To Protest”

    ‘Born To Protest’ brings to life real life stories from black British men and challenges the unconscious bias of his audience. Which in this case, will be unsuspecting passersby in North Birmingham. Joseph will bring in black male dancers from Birmingham to incorporate their stories into the piece.

  • SANITY embodies storytelling as an art form, encased within a distinctive blend of grime, hip-hop and jazz. The Birmingham native's relentless lyricism places her front-and-centre of a creative new wave defined by embracing fluidity and dismantling categories. Powerful messages are backed by unconventional instrumentals, as seen in her 2020 releases including EPs Lying in Truth and A Problem Shared, alongside her appearance on DEEP IT produced by the legendary DJ Zinc, all crafting deep soundscapes loaded with energy. SANITY's ascent as one of the most exciting voices in the UK scene is no surprise for the two-time Birmingham Music Awards winner, having made the 2020 shortlist for the BBC Introducing West Midlands One to Watch. Setting the tone for 2021, versatility and experimentation are the benchmarks of an artist creating captivating, genre-bending experiences.

  • Crafting Community

    Video / Lighting Artist Scylla Magda and Community Artist Sophie Handy, from Handsworth-based artist collective Crafting Community, have been delivering workshops and designing, creating & installing a variety of outdoor installations & projections in the Birchfield area to promote community cohesion, culture and a collective voice.

Call me unique

  • Singer / songwriter & guitarist Call Me Unique infuses the sounds of jazz, soul, futurebeats, and scat-singing. Influenced by the sounds of Lauryn Hill, Ed Sheeran, Ella Fitzgerald & Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes. Renowned for her love of scatting and eclectic performance approach, her vibe truly is "unique". Born in Manchester and raised in Handsworth, Birmingham, she always portrays an honest and heartfelt performance to any willing crowd. She has been officially highlighted as “Sound of 2019” by BBC West Midlands. She was nominated for best RnB/Soul 2020, nominated and won: Best RnB/Soul Artist 2019 as well as nominated for: Best Music Video 2019 & Best Female 2019 by the Birmingham Music Awards.

  • Lozells

    The launch event took place on Saturday 23rd October however more walking tours will take place in 2022.

M1llionz

  • Born in Handsworth, M1llionz spent some of his childhood in Birmingham but returned to his home area, where he developed his sound with influence from his Jamaican roots. This included the dancehall music which his parents played when he was growing up. He landed a top 40 single, "B1llionz", in 2020, his first song to chart in the UK. His breakthrough single was "North-West", released at the end of 2019 and he also made an impact with his drill anthem "Y Pree" in 2020. His debut mixtape Provisional License was released on 17 September 2021, with features from Headie One, AJ Tracey, Lotto Ash, and Jevon
